Book an afternoon.

Tuesday, 3 September 2013

I sometimes look at my bookshelves today and wonder which volumes my sons will treasure in twenty or thirty years. Which should I be saving for them? Which will fade with time?

It was a small afternoon project for my friend and I. We used up some of her family's collection of books and antiques to re-liven up her bookshelf.

Flea Finds

Thursday, 18 July 2013

A few days ago somebody asked me where certain things around the house were and my answer was quiet constant - flea market, flea market, flea..............So, I went around my house and put together all the things I have picked up from flea markets. They include wall arts, antiques, paintings, tiles, glasses, random things that I don't have names for. All I know is they all have a story- some longer than mine.

I promised a back story for this gorgeous cupboard and here it is. Couple of things to know about this DIY, is that its a lot of fun, easy, simple -which by now you know is our mantra, makes a great accent furniture. You can use it in many different ways and I found you some relevant inspirations. Hope you guys like this post as much as Keerthi liked putting it together. As usual, photos by moi!

Keerthi fought the summer heat and decided to go shopping for this piece of furniture, with the hope to convert it into her bar for her chic apartment. She bought it for Rs 1800 and transformed this old cupboard into a fun piece of furniture. Here's how:

What you need:

Step 1
  • paint/polish remover
  • gloves
  • brushes
  • sand paper
Apply the paint remover on the cupboard and let it dry for a minimum of 45 minutes. Use sand paper to strip it off paint or polish in order to reach its original texture.

Step 2

  • enamel paint in the colour you want
  • primer
  • brushes
  • turpentine
Apply the primer first and let it dry. Apply two coats of paint over the primer and let it dry overnight. Sand paper the cupboard at the areas where you feel there is maximum contact eg. near the drawers, the top, neat the handles.

Voila!

Bookshelf: Boring to Exciting in 5 mins!

BEFORE

Before we moved into our house, my husband used it as his bachelor pad. I'm not going into the details, but you can imagine how exciting a mechanical engineer with his love focused on cars would keep the house.
Here' s a basic BEFORE & AFTER styling of our bookshelf. Please do note, I have jut played around with things I already had and some hand me downs from our family. The bookends were our biggest buy for this area. I'd like to call this light on the pocket THERAPY- still therapeutic right?
