Old Fashioned Choclate Cake

Tuesday 5 March 2013

I remember my grandmother would make cakes using a regular aluminum pan on a stove. She would use a base plate filled with sand and a double broiler to bake the cake-I'm telling you, it used to be still as good as the cakes we bake in the ovens today. You have to agree with me that no matter how exotic any desert is, nothing beats a slice of warm chocolate cake just out of the oven.  I don't know how many of you have experienced this, but you sure can now by following these simple steps. Ladies and gentlemen I present to you chocolate cake THERAPY! The recipe I follow is so simple, that I am often tempted to make it all the time. I'm almost positive your going to question my method.

for the cake you need: 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup butter, 3 eggs, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, 1tsp baking powder, 1tbsp vanilla essence

1.preheat the oven to 180*C

2.mix all the ingredients, beat it well using a hand mixer or a fork

3.pour the mixture into an 8" cake tin

4.bake for 40-45mins

5.check if the cake is baked by inserting a toothpick in the center-should come out clean

6.cool on a rack for 1 hour or so and spread the icing once its cooled

for the icing you need: 250gms of cooking chocolate melted, 125gms butter melted and cooled, 125 icing sugar

1. mix all the ingredients

2. garnish with strawberries or edible flowers

and here's my inspiration

please do leave your comments for me, much appreciated

  6. It turned out great Sona. Had a bit of a problem with the icing but fixed it with a small addition. It has that homemade chocolate cake taste. Thanks much for the recipe!

  7. Excellent.Really glad you liked it. :)

PS: Did you add milk to the icing to fix it?

  8. Yep. I was in a hurry and impetulantly tossed in all the icing sugar at one. That's it I had a mass of gooey chocolate. I had to add about 2tbsp of cold milk to the hot icing to get it to spreadable consistency. Is that normal? Also, the cake was soooo delicate. I tried to cut in half to put some icing inside too and it broke :( The more I touched the more it broke. I put it together with the dressing though. I was glad for all the delicateness after the first bite :) Is it that delicate normally or did I do something :P
